Importance of Play

‘Play’ is defined as ‘engaging in activities for enjoyment and recreation rather than a serious or practical purpose’. What if someone told you that play is actually a great tool to instill values and promote holistic development in children?

Play can basically be divided into two categories: Structured and unstructured play. Structured play requires a child to follow rules and restrictions and is guided by an adult. Unstructured play allows a child to explore whatever they want to do and the child can do whatever interests them.

Play is important for healthy brain development. It  allows children to create and explore a world and find their role in it. They conquer their fears while practicing adult roles.

Cognitively, play helps build critical thinking skills, reinforces memory, cause and effect and encourages exploration and curiosity. Pretend play helps in strengthening imagination. It encourages fine and gross motor skills by developing spatial relationships, balance and dexterity. Also, it promotes the act of speaking and listening, which are important skills for the future. As the child plays, they are able to better process emotions like anger, sadness and grief. They are able to comprehend their identity and build self-esteem.

Although play is an important arena in children’s life associated with immediate, short-term and long-term benefits, there has been an on-going reduction in favour of educational instructions, especially in modern and urban societies.
